The 2011 BC Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer published earnings of 11.1 million dollars! I don’t know about you, but ‘WOW!’ I think that’s incredible. In an article from the Vancouver Sun, they stated that 2,900 riders/fundraisers came together to make this a record year.

It just goes to show what can happen when you can actually find a way to motivate people to act. Each rider needed to raise $2,500, which if you ask me, would be a daunting number. But, time and time again, people have shown, close friends of mine included (Cindy and Jon), that it can more than be done when you have a cause that unites us and stirs as much passion in people as the fight against cancer. Couple that with offering people the chance to challenge themselves, not just to fundraise, but to train and get fit enough to ride their bike 200km over two days (no easy feat for most people), and the result is nothing short of inspiring! Congratulations to everyone that has already ridden this year, and to everyone that is still set to ride here in Alberta and across the country. I have no doubt, that’s it will be because of initiatives just like this one, that we will see a cancer free future in our lifetime.

Though I’ve been a donor for several years now, I’d really like to toss my hat in the ring at some point. Maybe 2012. Not only would it be incredibly fulfilling to do the fundraising, (on the ERTCC site, I noticed some riders have raised as much as $60,000) but to just be there and to join in with thousands of other riders, with a common goal, would be a blast. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the event from a logistics point-of-view, great food, great medical staff, great volunteers and camping facilities, etc…, top marks across the board. Sounds good to me.
