Billed as “The Spring Classic Europe Wished it Had,” Speed Theory is looking to kick off the 2010 season in style. Sure to be a ‘bare-bones’ hard-man race with upwards of 20% of the 14.5km course being full-on gravel, this is guaranteed to be a great way to test your mettle for the 2010 season.
Originally billed as a spring classic ‘series,’ Speed Theory was hoping some of the other clubs would step in to host additional races. Sadly none have done so and the ‘series’ has been reduced to ‘a race.’ With that said, I’m glad that at least this one will be happening.
$5 at the ‘door’ will get you in, and regardless of your off-season fitness (or lack thereof) it should prove to be an exciting race since will put most roller-babies (I use the term lovingly) a little out of their comfort zone.
The distance should be manageable and unfolds as such:
- Cat A riders – 5 laps (72km)
- Cat B riders – 4 laps (58km)
- Cat C riders – 3 laps (43km)
Further details on the poster below, or on the Speed Theory website. Hope to see you there, even if you’re Cat Z like me ;-)

Hey
I organized de Ronde van Cowtown last year – 78km, 18 climbs, 1000m of vertical – but sadly cannot find the time to lead it this year. We had 25 people out – maybe this event will get more!
It is scheduled (if it happens) for the same day, at least, thats what the poster says!
Anyone wanna lead it?
So, I’m guessing this is a race more apt to favour a Crossbike, no?
I would anticipate a mix of bikes… Some cross, some road. I would imagine that the roadies will just be running a slightly more robust tire like the Vittoria Open Pavé.
The rubber you had on your road bike for cross season would probably do the trick.
Just a heads up to those interested, you will need to be an active ABA member to gain entry into the race (ie. dues paid, even if you haven’t received your license), so it’s not quite as simple as dropping in and racing. But there’s never been a better reason than to sign up for a membership and start racing that weekend!
Also, for those interested, they’ve posted a ‘digital’ lap of the course, in case you wanted to have a look and see just how rough the “pavé” is ;-)

Ah! Good to know. Tyler will be sad :-( He was going to make this one hi foray into the racing world. No day license available?
No, I checked, ’cause I had been putting the bug in a few peoples ears… Apparently day licenses are an mtb/cx anomaly.
These roadies are too buttoned down for our fly-by-night tactics ;-)
Maybe Tyler should stop being a pussy, man up and buy a license. If he beats me at the Prairie Roubaix, I’ll even pay for it…
More licensing info… Apparently you only need to be a “General” member of the ABA which is only $35, compared to a full membership at $125.
Those interested can register here.
