My hydration fruit-ade homemade sports drink recipe dilutes the fruit juice to the desired sugar concentration and then adds a little salt
http://brt-insights.blogspot.com/2009/09/hydration-fruit-ade-natural-fruit.html
so there is no need to add any refined sugar. It doesn't contain any of the chemical additives used in the commercial sports drinks.

Yeah, this is going to be something that I'm going to have to experiment with when the snow starts to disappear and I start heading out on longer rides...

Should I use something like a Gatorade powder and simply water it down, or should I just keep water in my pack and keep an actual full-strength energy drink on the bike?

I think experimentation will be key – Another thing that seems to be gaining in popularity are the 'electrolyte tabs' or something like that... Too many choices ;-)
